'West Side Story'
(Handout photo / December 30, 2008)This may be the area's musical theater event of the year. This revival is directed by Arthur Laurents, who wrote the original script. It is being billed as a grittier version of the Leonard Bernstein classic, with Spanish woven into the dialogue and songs. And it's going to Broadway next month, where it already has generated lots of buzz. Don't miss it. See West Side Story through Jan. 17 at the National Theatre, 1321 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W. in Washington. Showtimes vary. Tickets are $46.50-$151.50. Call 800-447-7400 or go to nationaltheatre.org.
